Joint Response to the Report on the Alberta Construction Labour Legislation Review

We are pleased that Mr. Sims’ report been released, and that the protracted process of reviewing the provisions of the Labour Relations Code affecting the construction industry is nearing closure.

In the limited time we have had to review the comprehensive report, it appears to be fair and balanced, and to have weighed the range of disparate interests of those who participated in the review.

While the results of the review did not provide everything we anticipated, Mr. Sims should be recognized for the efforts, wisdom and experience he invested in this very difficult assignment, and we will work with the Government of Alberta and with each other to ensure the recommended amendment to the legislation serve the best interests of the Alberta construction industry.

Throughout the review process, the Building Trades of Alberta, Construction Labour Relations – Alberta, and other registered employers’ organizations offered consensus submissions, as the parties most profoundly affected by the legislation under review. We hope that our collaborative approach to this review process contributed to the conclusions and solutions articulated in the report.
