The Building Trades of Alberta recently welcomed seven Conservative Members of Parliament for a tour of several BTA-affiliated union training centres in Calgary, highlighting the world-class apprenticeship, safety and skills development taking place across Alberta’s unionized construction trades.

The visiting MPs included Kyle Seeback, Kelly McCauley, Tom Kmiec, David McKenzie, Greg McLean, Amanpreet S. Gill and Dalwinder Gill. The tour brought them through Calgary training centres operated by UA Local 496, IUEC Local 130, Ironworkers Local 725, IBEW Local 424 and Sheet Metal Workers Local 8.

Throughout the visit, MPs had the opportunity to see firsthand how Alberta’s union training system prepares apprentices and journeypersons for the demands of modern construction. From mechanical and electrical systems to ironworking, elevators and sheet metal, each stop showcased the technical knowledge, hands-on training and strong safety culture that define the building trades.

For the BTA, the tour was an important opportunity to demonstrate the value that union training centres bring to Alberta’s economy. These facilities do more than teach a trade. They help build long-term careers, support major infrastructure and industrial projects, and ensure that Alberta has the skilled workforce needed to meet growing demand across the province.

The visit also underscored the role of apprenticeship in creating good-paying jobs and practical career pathways for young workers, career changers and underrepresented groups. BTA-affiliated training centres continue to invest in the next generation of skilled tradespeople by combining classroom instruction, hands-on learning and mentorship from experienced industry professionals.

At each training centre, the MPs were able to learn more about the standards, equipment and instruction that go into preparing workers for safe, productive and high-quality work on job sites. The tour provided a clear look at how Alberta’s unionized trades are helping address labour needs while maintaining the highest levels of skill, safety and professionalism.
