MEDIA RELEASE: BTA applauds Calgary council’s approval of Green Line LRT

CALGARY – The Building Trades of Alberta is pleased the City of Calgary will move forward with Stage 1 of the Green Line LRT mega project following a 14-1 council vote yesterday.

“Not only will the Green Line project create approximately 20,000 jobs, but it will save around 30,000 tons of greenhouse gas emissions annually and will be a tremendous boost to public mobility,” said Building Trades of Alberta Executive Director Terry Parker.

“Infrastructure investments in mega projects like this are what’s needed to help Calgary, and the province, begin economic recovery in the wake of collapsed oil prices and the pandemic,” said Parker. “We look forward to seeing the project become reality and providing the Alberta skilled trades workers needed to get it done.”

On May 25, the Building Trades of Alberta made a submission to the City of Calgary in support of Green Line and urged the city to do all it can to hire Alberta-based labour, including Indigenous workers, women and other underrepresented groups in the skilled trades, through the signatory contractors who employ them, for all stages of the north-south construction.

Work is expected to start as early as spring 2021, with the first stage projected to open in 2026.

The Building Trades of Alberta proudly represents 18 local unions with more than 60,000 skilled trades members province wide.
