The BTA, with support from other unions attended the debate at the Legislative Assembly of Alberta on Private Member's Motion No. 506 in support of democratic unions and against undemocratic labour providers (such as CLAC).Democracy is a fundamental component of the BTA. Our members elect the representatives of their union locals. This creates a system of accountability that allows members to decide who negotiates their collective agreements, represents them at the Alberta Labour Relations Board, and advocates for their interests. The motion correctly identified labour organizations that do not implement a system of democracy as being detrimental to workers. We thank the members of both parties for their contributions to the debate and we thank MLA Heather Sweet for Edmonton-Manning for bringing the motion forward. While it did not pass, it is important for our legislators to engage in discussions around labour in Alberta.#buildingtradesofalberta #ableg #abpoli ... See MoreSee Less
